Deluxe Hardbound Pogue Catalogs and Books

By Q. David Bowers, Founder

The D. Brent Pogue Collection, after just three sales, has become the most valuable numismatic collection ever sold. With total auction prices realized of $68,569,181 the Pogue Collection has now passed both the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection ($63,052,197) and the Eric P. Newman Collection ($61,880,912). In addition, individual coins in the collection have set price records as well. It is unlikely that there will ever be another collection to compare with this extraordinary cabinet.

Reflections on the First Three Pogue Collection Sales

Reflections on the First Three Pogue Collection Sales

By Q. David Bowers, Founder

Every now and again an event happens in numismatics that is pivotal, that captures the attention and imagination of the whole nation, sometimes the whole world, and is not likely to be ever repeated. As I reflect on the excitement generated by our recent D. Brent Pogue Collection Part III sale at Sotheby’s, I can count my long-time association with Brent Pogue and our recent showcasing of the collections as such an event --

A message from Q. David Bowers:

As the Stack’s Bowers Galleries auction of the D. Brent Pogue Collection Part III nears, I take the opportunity to comment on several things:

An American Treasure

Welcome to our description of one of the very finest half cents ever to cross the auction block! Close your eyes and think of rarities among half cents, and the two varieties of 1797 come to mind, the 1793 is of course a classic, and scattered others include 1831, 1836, the Proof-only issues of the 1840s and 1852. Unless you are a specialist or scholar, 1797 might not come to mind.

Incredible Gem 1793 Chain AMERICA Cent, An American Numismatic Landmark

Incredible Gem 1793 Chain AMERICA Cent, An American Numismatic Landmark

The Finest Ever Certified!

There is something incredible, something special, about any 1793 Chain cent. First delivered by the coiner at the Mint on March 1, 1793, these were released into circulation without fanfare. There is no known record of anyone having a numismatic interest in them at the time. The result was that the several varieties of the 1793 Chain cent passed into circulation without notice. Most became worn, some extremely so. In 1859 in his American Numismatical Manual Montroville W. Dickeson commented that such pieces could still be found in circulation.
