A newly discovered Serial Number 1 Series of 1882 $5 Brown Back from the First National Bank of Earlville, Illinois, Charter #3323, will be offered in the Stack's Bowers Galleries Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Winter Expo in Baltimore, Maryland.
This fantastic note has been graded and encapsulated as Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ by PMG and also received the grading service's new Star designation. The note features large even margins with bright, well embossed paper and a boldly printed overprint. The penned bank officers’ signatures are well signed and clearly legible.
The First National Bank of Earlville, Illinois was chartered March 3, 1885 and issued a total of $796,620 before going into receivership November 10, 1933. Until now no Serial Number 1 notes were known on the bank. The lot will carry a pre-auction estimate of $8,000 to $12,000.
